When it came to buying fruit flavored snacks, drinks and frozen treats, cherry was usually my go to flavor. Sure, those cherry flavored foods tasted great but they were made with artificial flavoring. As a child I didn’t know any better and preferred the artificial cherry flavor over eating real cherries. Believe it or not, it wasn’t until I became older that I got to fully appreciate the natural sweetness and flavor of real cherries. It started when I first discovered the sweet white rainier cherries.
I had never seen white cherries before. I only knew of the traditional red cherries so I was intrigued with this other type of cherry that just came out of nowhere. White rainier cherries have a golden yellow and pink reddish exterior and a creamy yellow color on the inside. When I took my first bite, the sweet juice tickled my taste buds and totally changed the way I thought of the traditional cherry and quickly became one of my top five favorite fruits to eat.
Once I was sold on the white rainier cherries, I wanted to eat them all the time, but they are only in season from June to late August just like their counterpart the dark sweet cherries. I like to take full advantage of their availability during the summer and eat them as much as I can. I usually eat the white rainier cherries raw and prefer to add the dark sweet cherries to my smoothies.
The recipe for this berry cherry smoothie contains high amounts of potassium from the dark sweet cherries combined with vitamins C and K from the blueberries and strawberries to give you a smoothie packed with the essential daily vitamins you need. I also added some spinach to the recipe in order to get your dose of daily greens in. This creamy smoothie is great to drink as a midday snack or before you hit the gym.
All this talk about cherries is making me want some so while I go grab a handful of cherries to nosh on, enjoy drinking this berry cherry smoothie!
