What Are The Best Spring Time Fruits and Vegetables?

Spring has sprung and you know what that means?  The weather is getting warmer, the flowers are blooming, and there’s a new collection of fruits and vegetables that are in season right now.  Spring time fruits like lychee and pineapple help refresh your body for the warmer weather that’s ahead.

The fruits and vegetables on this list will not only save you money during the spring season but taste better as well. The majority of fruits and vegetables are available year-round which makes us forget that the availability of certain foods is supposed to change when the seasons change.  This also determines the price change of fruits and vegetables throughout the year.

When produce is not in season there is a limited amount available that results in higher prices.  When produce is in season there is an abundance of those fruits and vegetables that drives the price down.

Produce that is not in season are usually shipped in from different places around the world.  They contain more pesticides and preservatives in order to withstand the longer trip to your supermarket.  Also, the chemical additives help make the produce look appealing to customers so they can purchase them.  Seasonal produce usually contain less chemicals and are locally produced which cuts down on the distance they will travel to your local supermarket.

Another benefit of eating seasonally is that you get to try a wide variety of food.  You will be exposed to different types of produce you otherwise wouldn’t know exists.  Expanding your palate with these foods can also improve your diet and expand your knowledge of produce.

The next time you are in the supermarket during the spring months be sure to pick up several of the fruits and vegetables that are listed below.  Your taste buds and body will thank you.
